Argentina’s Olympics Match Ends in Chaos as Fans Target Players with Bottles and Fireworks
The 2024 Olympic Games have gotten off to a chaotic start, with Argentina’s match against Morocco ending in controversy and violence. Footage has emerged of Moroccan fans throwing bottles and fireworks at Argentina’s players as they celebrated their dramatic equalizer in the dying seconds of the game.
The match was a thrilling one, with Argentina coming back from 2-0 down to snatch a 2-2 draw. The 22-year-old midfielder Cristian Medina headed home the equalizer in the 16th minute of injury time, sparking wild celebrations among the Argentine players.
But the joy was short-lived, as Moroccan fans responded by pelting the Argentine players with bottles and cups. The situation escalated after the full-time whistle, with players like Manchester City’s Julian Alvarez being targeted with fireworks as they made their way to the tunnel.
The chaos was so intense that several Morocco fans invaded the pitch, leading to confusion over whether the full-time whistle had been blown or the match temporarily halted. The big screens inside the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard displayed a message that read: "Your session has been suspended, please make your way to the nearest exit."
The controversy didn’t end there, with Morocco’s players and coaches left furious over the officiating team’s decision to add 15 minutes of injury-time despite the fact there were few stoppages during the second half. There was also a potential offside in the build-up to the Argentina goal that was not given on the field or by the VAR.
Second half substitute Ignacio Fernandez also looked fortunate to avoid a red card for a two-footed challenge. The whole incident has left a sour taste in the mouth, and it’s clear that the 2024 Olympic Games are going to be a wild ride.
