Gary Lineker Was Keen to Leave BBC for ITV, but was Knocked Back
It looks like Gary Lineker might have been looking to trade in his Match of the Day presenter’s seat for a new challenge, but unfortunately for him, it wasn’t meant to be. According to reports, Lineker was in talks with ITV about leaving the BBC for their sports coverage, but the offer was turned down.
As one of the most recognizable faces on British television, Lineker has been presenting Match of the Day since 1999 and has also fronted the BBC’s coverage of international football. However, despite his successful career, the 63-year-old was reportedly keen to explore other options, including a potential switch to ITV.
But it seems ITV weren’t interested in bringing Lineker on board, at least not in the role of their main sports presenter. This might be because the broadcaster already has a solid team of presenters, including Laura Woods and Mark Pougatch, or because they didn’t see Lineker as the right fit for their vision.
This isn’t the first time Lineker has been linked with a potential departure from the BBC. Last year, he was temporarily suspended from presenting Match of the Day after a row over his social media posts, which some accused of being impartial. The incident sparked a huge outcry, with many boycotting the BBC’s sports coverage until Lineker was allowed back on the air.
Despite this controversy, Lineker remains one of the most beloved figures in British football, and it’s unlikely that he’ll be leaving the BBC for good anytime soon. After all, who else could get away with wearing a suit and tie on TV while still managing to look effortlessly cool?
