Chelsea’s Pre-Season Heats Up as Enzo Maresca Gets Frustrated with Youngster
The countdown to the new Premier League season has officially begun, and for Chelsea fans, it’s time to put last year’s struggles behind them and focus on what’s to come. New boss Enzo Maresca, appointed in June, has his work cut out for him to revive the Blues’ fortunes.
But, judging by his reaction to a recent training session, Maresca’s not taking it easy. He was left looking none-too-pleased when young Noni Madueke slowed the pace down during a drill. "Noni, two touches, three touches is too much!" he snapped, his patience clearly wearing thin. So, what’s going on?
The 22-year-old attacking midfielder, signed from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023 for around £30 million, has yet to impress at Stamford Bridge. Despite playing 23 league matches last term, Madueke managed only five goals and two assists. Maybe Maresca’s trying to whip him into shape, fast.
It’s make or break for Chelsea, too. After a tumultuous two years since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital took the reins, the Blues have slumped from crisis to crisis, sacking four managers in a little over a year. You could argue it’s a reflection of their squad, but Maresca’s got the chance to stamp his authority on this team.
Their pre-season itinerary is packed: trips to the US for clashes against Wrexham, Celtic, Club America, Manchester City, and Real Madrid before taking on Inter Milan at the Bridge. A tough baptism, but potentially valuable experience.
Maresca’s competitive Chelsea debut isn’t far off, with a grueling opener against Manchester City just around the corner. One thing’s for certain: he’s got work to do to restore pride and optimism to the Chelsea faithful.
