Spain rocked by furious row involving key player a day before Euro 2024 final against England

Spain’s Euro 2024 Dreams in Jeopardy as Furious Row Erupts with Athletic Bilbao President

Spain’s hopes of lifting their first European Championship trophy since 2012 are hanging in the balance after a bitter dispute between the Spanish FA and Athletic Bilbao president Jon Uriarte.

At the center of the controversy is 22-year-old star player Nico Williams, who has been the subject of intense transfer speculation following his impressive performances at Euro 2024. Williams has a release clause of £49 million and is contracted to Bilbao until 2027.

Uriarte has slammed the Spanish FA for failing to protect Williams, who has been bombarded with questions about his future during media appearances at the tournament. In a strongly-worded statement, the Bilbao chief claimed that the FA has not done enough to shield the player from the intense scrutiny.

"Nico, a player who is committed to Athletic, has been subjected to a bombardment of questions about his future in an excessive and uncontrolled manner while at the European Championships," Uriarte said. "The RFEF have not been able to protect him. Respect between all the actors who make up football is a fundamental basis, or that’s how we view it at Athletic, which does not include subjecting players with contracts at one club to public pressure to join other clubs."

However, the Spanish FA has refuted Uriarte’s claims, releasing a statement that reads: "RFEF has treated Nico Williams in the same way we have treated the other 25 players who travelled to Germany. The impact that any of his words might have had is totally related to his performances and the great level he’s shown, and not to RFEF treating him differently."

The fallout from this row could have significant consequences for Spain’s chances of winning the tournament. Williams’ future is uncertain, and his lack of focus could affect his performance on the pitch. The Spanish FA needs to resolve this issue quickly to avoid any further distractions.
