Cristiano Ronaldo’s Golden Era at an End? Ian Wright Raises Concerns
As the curtains closed on Portugal’s Euro 2024 campaign, a sense of disappointment hung in the air. The defending champions were sent packing by France in the quarter-finals, and it’s fair to say that Cristiano Ronaldo’s lack of goal-scoring prowess was a major factor in their exit.
Ian Wright, the former England forward and Arsenal legend, has added fuel to the fire by stating that Ronaldo is no longer "cut" to play at the top level. The 38-year-old superstar failed to score a single goal in the tournament, marking a first in his illustrious career. Wright believes that Portugal’s team is so strong that they should be disappointed by their early exit, and that Ronaldo’s poor form was a major contributor to their downfall.
"What I saw of him, he can’t cut it at this level now," Wright said on Sky Sports’ Stick to Football: The Overlap Special. "As good as he is, as fit as he is, as driven as he is, you can see he just can’t quite get it out of his feet to get a shot in, the movement with a header, he can’t get past a defender now."
Wright’s comments have sparked a debate about Ronaldo’s future at the international level. His teammate during his time at Manchester United, Roy Keane, has suggested that the veteran striker should take a break from international football and reassess his situation before the World Cup 2026.
"He should have a break and step back from international football, and if he’s still playing at club level, then have a look at the World Cup when it comes around," Keane said. "When you’re playing at the highest level, you really can’t carry anybody. His movement is still there – against France, brilliant."
Ronaldo’s lack of goal-scoring form has raised questions about his ability to adapt to the modern game. He may still be a prolific goal-scorer at club level, but his failure to score in a major tournament is a worrying sign for his international career.
As the debate rages on, one thing is clear: Ronaldo’s golden era is coming to an end. But can he still be a force to be reckoned with at the highest level? Only time will tell.
