Stadium might not be ready in time for UK and Ireland to host Euro 2028

Euro 2028: UK and Ireland’s Casement Park in Danger of Not Being Ready

The UK and Ireland’s bid to host the 2028 European Football Championship (Euro 2028) is in a state of crisis, with concerns growing that Casement Park, one of the venues selected for the tournament, may not be ready in time.

According to official estimates, the redevelopment of Casement Park, which has been closed since 2013, will now cost a staggering £308m, a significant increase from the original forecast of £78.5m. This massive surge in costs has raised serious doubts about the stadium’s ability to be completed before the tournament in four years’ time.

Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn has reiterated his commitment to delivering the project, despite the setbacks. However, the timeline and budget concerns are still a major issue. Benn acknowledged the challenges, stating that there’s a "certain amount of money in the pot, but it’s not enough" to cover the costs. Additionally, the stadium’s completion is now in "extra time" mode, which raises further doubts about its readiness for the tournament.

While the situation is dire, it’s essential to remember that the success of the tournament depends heavily on the preparation and infrastructure of the selected venues. Casement Park, which has a planned capacity of 34,000, is a vital part of the UK and Ireland’s hosting plan.
