Penalty Row: Gary Neville and Ian Wright Clash Over England’s Winner vs Netherlands
The Euro 2024 semi-final between England and the Netherlands saw some intense drama, and we’re not just talking about the stunning winner scored by Harry Kane! The Three Lions’ captain converted a penalty awarded by VAR after an initial wave-off from the referee. And boy, did that spark a heated debate!
Check out this sickening challenge from Denzel Dumfries, and you can understand why Harry Kane went down under pressure:
Gary Neville, never one to hold back, blasted the decision on ITV, calling it a "disgraceful decision". He emphasized his frustration as a defender, stating: "To have that given against me as a penalty at any time, but particularly in a game of such importance… I was fuming with the penalty in the Denmark game, the handball – I was offended by it."
Ian Wright, not one to shy away from a row, jumped to the defense of the VAR officials. He argued: "The way he’s challenged there… Gary, that’s why he’s given it! It’s VAR. If that’s anywhere else on the pitch, you get a foul for it! Penalties are given for those."
Felix Zwayer’s original call was to play on, but VAR intervened, awarding a spot-kick after a closer look. Fans were split, with some believing the referee’s initial call was the correct one. Whatever the outcome, one thing’s for sure – this penalty has got people talking!
What do you think, 90min crew? Should the penalty have been given, or was it a harsh call? Share your thoughts in the comments!
