Martino: Vini merits Ballon d’Or, Messi still best

Tata Martino: Vinicius Júnior Deserves Ballon d’Or, But Messi Is Still the Best

Lionel Messi’s absence from the Ballon d’Or nominees for the first time since 2003 has sparked controversy, but Inter Miami coach Gerardo "Tata" Martino believes there’s still a strong case for the iconic Argentine. According to Martino, Vinicius Júnior, 24, had an incredible season with Real Madrid, earning him a spot among the top candidates for the prestigious individual trophy.

Vinicius’s impressive stats – 24 goals and 11 assists in all competitions, including his game-winning goal in the Champions League final – have made him a hot favorite to win the award. However, Martino thinks that despite this outstanding form, Messi is still the clear best player in the world.

"It’s never been something that catches my attention, and I’m not always clear if the award is for the best of the year or of the world," Martino explained. "Vinicius Júnior probably has the merit [of being the best last season], but if you ask me who is the best right now, it’s Messi."

Messi, 37, is still the arguable greatest of all time, with a record eight Ballon d’Or awards under his belt. His former Barcelona teammate, Jordi Alba, also defended Messi, stating, "I have never given much importance to the Ballon d’Or, but for me, Leo always has to be there. He continues to make a difference, he is the best in the world without a doubt when at his highest level."

While there’s a strong case for Vinicius, Messi’s incredible track record and ongoing form make him a strong contender for this year’s MVP award. With 20 goals and 16 assists in just 19 games, Messi is the leading candidate in Major League Soccer’s MVP award for this season.

As we await the Ballon d’Or announcement, the debate will continue. Do you agree with Tata Martino – is Messi still the best in the world, or does Vinicius’s incredible season merit the top prize? Follow us on all social media platforms for more updates and join the conversation!
