Most valuable players in 2007/08: Messi makes his first appearance

20 Years of Market Values: The 2007/08 Season that Revolved Around Ronaldo, Messi, and Kaka

We’re throwing it back to the 2007/08 season, a year of incredible football, and some remarkable market values. At the top of the list, two Brazilians dominated the game – Ronaldinho and Kaka. But Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi were on the rise, and it’s no surprise that they’d eventually become the faces of Fútbol.

The Rise of Ronaldinho

Ronaldinho was having a season to remember, with his market value skyrocketing to €80m – a new record and the highest point of his career. But injuries hampered his progress, and his numbers took a hit. Kaka, on the other hand, played a tremendous season, directly involved in 34 goals, and his market value reached €70m.

The Arrival of Messi and Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo made his debut on our most valuable XI in 2006/07, while Lionel Messi made his first appearance a year later. The Argentine sensation was already making waves, scoring ten goals in LaLiga, and assisting another 14. He added six more in the Champions League, and at just 20, his market value reached €60m, making him the third most valuable player on the planet.

A Squad of Stars

The 2007/08 season saw a star-studded squad, with four LaLiga representatives: Carles Puyol and Sergio Ramos, both valued at €30m, alongside Cristiano Ronaldo. The Premier League was represented by John Terry (€33m), Ashley Cole (€19m), Steven Gerrard (€45m), and Thierry Henry (€45m).
