Zidane’s Dream Five-a-Side Team: A Surprising Addition and a Snub for Ronaldo
Former Real Madrid legend Zinedine Zidane has revealed his dream five-a-side team, and it includes a player you might not have heard of – Zvonimir Boban, the Croatian midfielder who featureed in the 1998 World Cup.
The Frenchman is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, having won the World Cup and Euros with France, as well as numerous club titles. He also managed Real Madrid to significant success, including three consecutive Champions League titles.
Zidane, currently on a hiatus from management, dropped some insights during a chat with SI Soccer. He picked Fabien Barthez, his former French teammate, as his goalkeeper. Zidane then selected Paolo Maldini, the legendary AC Milan and Italy defender, to partner Boban in defense.
The midfield trio, which includes himself, N’Golo Kante, and the aforementioned Boban, is a force to be reckoned with. The latter, known for his exceptional vision and passing, played alongside Zidane in the 1998 World Cup and was part of the Croatian side that finished third.
Zidane chose Ronaldo Nazario, his former teammate, as his striker. The Brazilian superstar, he says, is the best he’s ever played with. Although Cristiano Ronaldo, his current and former player, did not make the cut, Zidane has praised the Portuguese in the past, calling him "a phenomenon."
No English players made the cut, despite Zidane’s praise for Steven Gerrard, who he considered the best midfielder in the world for a few years. Zidane’s decision might have been influenced by the fact they only faced each other once, at Euro 2004.
