In a 2015 interview for a documentary, Zlatan revealed: "When he played with Cristiano Ronaldo, all the work was done by Rooney. These great players have their moments over one to three years, but to continue over five years, like Rooney has, it’s not easy. It’s pressure every day playing for a big team."
Zlatan’s words are a stark contrast to Ronaldo’s recent comments, which slammed Rooney for being jealous of his own career longevity. But the Swede’s perspective is backed by the numbers. Rooney was Manchester United’s top scorer, with 253 goals in 539 appearances. He won two Premier League titles and the Champions League during his tenure.
The highlight of Zlatan’s own United career was playing alongside Rooney, with the pair winning the Carabao Cup and Europa League under José Mourinho.
"Great players have exceptional phases that last from between one to three years, it’s not normal that this phase lasts five years as in the case with Rooney," Zlatan said in the documentary. "If I can’t play alongside Wayne, then I’ll just need to keep watching him on television."
