England Star Admits He’d Be Open to Shock Manchester United Transfer
The Three Lions are gearing up for their upcoming Nations League fixtures against Greece and Finland, and interim manager Lee Carsley has named his latest squad. Among those included is 24-year-old Angel Gomes, who has been impressing since his move to Lille from Manchester United.
Gomes has spoken about his time at Old Trafford, revealing that he’d have to consider a proposal from the Red Devils if one came his way. In an interview with The Times, he said, "I do sometimes think about where I would be now [if I stayed at United]. I think it’s normal to feel like that, but the jump and trajectory that I took, the places that I’ve been, what I’ve learnt from the different coaches along the way, the detail, effort and love they have put into my game, I don’t think I would be where I am now without it."
Gomes made five appearances for United between 2016 and 2020, but turned down the offer of a new contract and instead signed a five-year deal with Lille. However, he’s since become a key player for the French side, directly involved in 18 goals since the start of the 2022/23 season.
While Gomes admitted that returning to United would be a difficult decision, he also emphasized that his happiness abroad isn’t dependent on playing in the Premier League. "As amazing as it would be, after finding happiness abroad I know [playing in the Premier League] is not the be-all and end-all. There’ll always be that sentimental soft spot, so of course it would be difficult to say no [to returning to United]."
Gomes’ comments have sparked excitement among Manchester United fans, who would love to see the talented midfielder return to Old Trafford. With his impressive form and versatility, he could be an ideal addition to Erik ten Hag’s squad.
