MIA-MIN-DAY VICTORY: Messi Helps Inter Miami Claim Historic Shield Win
Inter Miami won their first-ever MLS Cup Supporters’ Shield, conquering Columbus Crew 3-2 in a frenetic encounter. Lionel Messi was the star of the show, netting both goals before the break – including a stunning freekick – as the Argentine king secured the Shield for Roger Schmidt’s side.
Juventus legend Diego Rossi found the net for Columbus during the second half, after Luis Suarez had responded earlier to Messi’s opener by heading home. Juan Hernández then scored a pivotal penalty before Rudy Camacho’s sending-off sealed Los Angeles’ fate.
An emotional Messi spoke to @Apple TV after the big win: “I am happy, happy that we did it. We won the Shield, and everyone worked for it…. We took charge from the beginning, we had players to do this. But now, we’re dreaming of more.”
Manager Phil Neville, who has spearheaded Inter Miami’s domestic and international success, chimed in: “Every single player, every coaches, we’ve all talked about being the best on the field. We need to continue this momentum [into the playoffs]. As a group, we now know what it takes”
Messi’s incredible achievements are nothing new, including the Leagues Cup this year, and his work ethic, which has fueled his on-field success during his Inter Miami tenure should not be underestimated. These qualities, combined with talented teammates, have propelled Martinez’s team to the zenith of the MLS.
