Inter Miami have won their second trophy since Lionel Messi’s arrival, with the Argentine maestro inspiring his team to a 3-2 victory over Columbus Crew in the Supporters’ Shield final. Messi scored a stunning free-kick and added another goal to his tally, as Miami secured the win and the title.
The Argentine opened the scoring with some brilliant link-up play with Jordi Alba, before Diego Rossi levelled proceedings. But Messi restored his side’s lead with a sublime free-kick, leaving the Crew goalkeeper with no chance. Suarez added a third goal in the second-half, as Cucho Hernandez pulled one back for the Crew.
Miami held on for the win, clinching their second piece of silverware under Messi’s guidance. The 37-year-old has now won 46 trophies in his illustrious career, and shows no signs of slowing down. Speaking after the game, Messi hailed the arrivals of coach Gerardo Martino, as well as Suarez, Alba, and Sergio Busquets, saying: "I am happy. Happy that we did it. At the beginning of the year we knew that this was a group to fight for this. We took charge from the beginning, we had the players to do this."
The Supporters’ Shield is one of the two major trophies in Major League Soccer (MLS), alongside the MLS Cup. Messi has completely transformed Miami’s fortunes since his switch, weighing in with goals and assists. In 34 games across all competitions, he has scored an impressive 30 goals and recorded 17 assists.
