In a recent interview with TNT Sports Mexico, former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard was asked to weigh in on the long-standing Cristiano Ronaldo vs Lionel Messi debate. Lampard, who has previously changed his mind on the topic, has now settled on a definitive stance.
For those who may not be aware, Lampard initially favored Messi back in 2020, citing his "pure, natural talent." However, after watching a debate between Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville, he switched to Ronaldo, impressed by the Portuguese superstar’s "numbers, output, goals, and dedication."
But, in his latest interview, Lampard took a more nuanced approach. When asked about the debate, he began by saying, "I don’t like this conversation." He then acknowledged that both players are among the greatest of all time, saying, "I have to respect them both in the same way. I don’t think it’s fair to try and put one above the other."
Lampard, who played against both players during his career, believes that they are in a league of their own. "I played against both, more with Cristiano when he was at Manchester United and with Messi I played against a lot in some big games between Chelsea and Barcelona," he explained. "Messi for me individually for talent is the greatest ever probably, in my opinion."
However, he also acknowledged Ronaldo’s incredible achievements, saying, "But with Cristiano, what he did in terms of what he made himself and the numbers, output, goals, and dedication—even now to this day—means that they’re just there together."
It’s clear that Lampard has a deep respect for both players, and doesn’t want to diminish their achievements by trying to pit them against each other. As he so eloquently put it, "I think they’ve been the most amazing players, and I’m honored that I could play against them."
