Jamie Carragher calls for Liverpool player to be ‘fined’ despite helping Arne Slot’s men run out 5-1 winners against West Ham

Carragher Slams Nunez for "Clumsy" Foul in Liverpool’s Win Over West Ham

Liverpool’s 5-1 thrashing of West Ham in the Carabao Cup has been met with widespread praise, but one moment of recklessness from Darwin Nunez has left Jamie Carragher fuming.

As the Reds ran riot in the second half, scoring four goals without reply, Carragher was left irked by Nunez’s clumsy foul on Danny Ings in the 23rd minute. The Uruguayan’s needless challenge earned a free-kick for West Ham, and Carragher believes the striker should be held accountable for his actions.

"That’s a clumsy foul, yeah, I mean we’ve already seen one at the other end but Nunez there…honestly, it’s the one thing in football I’ll never be able to get my head around when I see someone just run straight into the back of someone, going absolutely nowhere," Carragher said.

"I think there should be a fine for that, honestly I do. If I was a manager, I would fine players for that."

While the free-kick came to nothing, Carragher’s point is valid. Nunez’s lack of discipline and awareness in the tackle put his team at risk of conceding a goal, and his manager, Jürgen Klopp, may have to address the issue.

Despite the controversy, Liverpool’s dominant display saw them progress to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, with Diogo Jota, Cody Gakpo, and Mohamed Salah all finding the net.

West Ham boss Arne Slot praised his team’s character after the game, saying: "Not only fans love winning trophies, players do and managers do as well…we all love to win something but that’s far away, we have to play our first game of this tournament tomorrow."

With the Carabao Cup providing a welcome distraction from the Premier League, Liverpool will look to build on this impressive win and make a deep run in the competition.
