As Scott McTominay settled into his new life in Naples, he penned a heartfelt open letter to Napoli fans, expressing his gratitude and excitement for the opportunity to play for the iconic Italian club. The 27-year-old midfielder, who left Manchester United this summer, has wasted no time in making an impact in Serie A, impressing fans and pundits alike with his tireless work ethic and skill on the pitch.
In his letter, McTominay reveals his childhood passion for football, citing Wayne Rooney and Zinedine Zidane as his idols. He shares his determination to succeed, saying, "I want to play very well and focus on helping the team. My football idols were Wayne Rooney and Zinedine Zidane, players like that. I always watched them a lot and wanted to pay attention to everything they did in the game and try to emulate them even as a child."
The Scotsman also speaks about his family, saying, "My family did everything they could to help me travel across England to play football with Manchester United as a child. Then over the years I played in all categories until I made my debut in the first team and played a few games." He credits his parents for their unwavering support, saying, "My father was a very avid runner when he was younger. He still runs now and I still can’t beat some of his five-kilometer and ten-mile times. And he reminds me of that a lot."
McTominay also opens up about his personal life, sharing his love for backgammon, a strategic board game he plays regularly. "It’s a game of Greek and Turkish origin. So, yeah, I love it. I play it all the time. All the time," he says with a smile.
As he continues to settle into his new surroundings, McTominay acknowledges the challenges of learning Italian, saying, "Italian is not easy to follow because… I speak fast but when I hear people speaking Italian they speak really fast and it’s hard to understand exactly what they’re saying." However, he’s committed to learning the language, planning to get a private tutor to help him improve his skills.
The midfielder’s ultimate goal is to win the Scudetto with Napoli, saying, "My dream is to win the Scudetto with Napoli, to win trophies and be successful. I just want to do my best to help the team, fight for the future and push my career to the max, I want to be as fit as possible and train as hard as I can for the rest of my career, which I hope will be very long."
In conclusion, McTominay’s letter is a heartwarming tribute to the fans, expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to play for Napoli and his determination to succeed. As he looks to the future, we can’t wait to see what the season holds for the Scotsman and his new team.
