As Carragher pointed out, the current system where games can end in draws can be frustrating for fans. The former Liverpool defender is tired of seeing teams kick the ball out of play to waste time, which can stop the game dead in its tracks.
"It fing pisses me off. It winds me up," Carragher said. "The game is stopping all the time. People bluffing injuries, it stops the game. Just get on with the fing game."
Neville’s Solution
Neville’s proposal would see teams compete in a penalty shootout to determine the winner after every drawn game. This would add an extra layer of excitement to the game, making it more engaging for fans. As he pointed out, kids love penalties, and this could be a great way to make the game more appealing to a younger audience.
"It’s something that would make the fans happy," Neville said. "If a kid goes to a game for the first time or it might be their only game this season, and sees a 0-0 or 1-1 draw, there would be a winner at least."
A Very Americanized Idea?
Roy Keane wasn’t convinced by Neville’s proposal, describing it as "very Americanized." However, the EFL Trophy has already experimented with this rule, with teams earning an extra point if a game is drawn.
Distribution Reform Needed
Neville wasn’t done there. He also called for a shake-up in the way that Premier League teams are distributed. He believes that every team should have an equal chance of being promoted and relegated, rather than having a massive disparity between the Championship and Premier League.
