First Carabao Cup fixture involving Premier League club called off after flooding leaves stadium with ‘sinkhole’ in the pitch

Newcastle’s Carabao Cup Tie Against AFC Wimbledon Postponed Due to Floods

Bad news for Newcastle United and AFC Wimbledon fans as their Carabao Cup tie has been postponed due to extensive flooding at Wimbledon’s Plough Lane stadium.

The match was scheduled to take place on Tuesday at 7:45 pm, but the devastating weather conditions have left the pitch and surrounding areas in a state of disrepair. Footage from Twitter user Sam Neve shows the extent of the damage, with a sinkhole emerging in one corner of the pitch and the connecting streets to the stadium completely flooded.

AFC Wimbledon announced the postponement on social media, stating that due to the overnight flooding of the River Wandle and surrounding areas, the fixture against Newcastle United has been postponed. The League Two side is now working to reschedule the match for a later date.

The Met Office has issued several ‘significant’ flood warnings across England, with Wimbledon among the areas affected. The bad weather is expected to continue throughout the week, with six other Carabao Cup third-round ties still set to take place.

Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool are all at home, while Aston Villa travels to Wycombe and Leicester faces a trip to Walsall. Stay tuned for updates on the postponement and rescheduling of the Newcastle-AFC Wimbledon match.
