Asian Champions League Kicks Off: Ronaldo’s Absence Affects Al Nassr
The revamped Asian Champions League got underway on Monday, with some surprising results across the board. Saudi clubs Al Nassr and Al Ahli were among the teams in action, and it was clear that they’re going to have to step up their game if they want to make a deep run in the competition.
Al Nassr struggled in the absence of their star man Cristiano Ronaldo, who was ruled out due to a viral infection. The Portuguese superstar didn’t travel with the squad for the match against Al Shorta in Iraq, and it showed. The team managed a 1-1 draw, with full-back Sultan Al Ghannam scoring the opener. However, a mix-up at the back allowed Al Shorta to equalize, and the hosts drew level.
Meanwhile, Al Ahli got off to a winning start with a 1-0 victory over Persepolis in Jeddah. New recruit Ivan Toney made his Asian football debut, and it was an eventful one. Toney won a penalty and had a golden opportunity to score, but it wasn’t meant to be. Still, the English international’s presence was a big boost for the home team.
In other matches, Al Ain began their title defense with a 1-1 draw against Al Sadd, while Esteghlal thrashed Al Gharafa 3-0. The new format features 24 teams, with each club playing four matches at home and four away. The top eight in each side of the draw will progress to the knockout stages early next year.
The Asian Champions League is always an exciting competition, and this season promises to be no different. With so many talented teams and players involved, it’s going to be a wild ride. Who will come out on top? Only time will tell.
