Manchester City Tipped to Be Cleared of Premier League Charges
The highly anticipated hearing into Manchester City’s alleged breaches of financial rules is set to begin on Monday, and former financial advisor Stefan Borson believes the club will be cleared of all charges.
The Premier League brought the 115 charges against City in February 2023, with the club denying all allegations and claiming they have "irrefutable evidence" to prove their innocence. The hearing is expected to last two weeks, with a verdict not expected until the end of the season.
According to the London Evening Standard, a heavy points deduction or fine is seen as the most likely punishment if City are found guilty of the more serious charges. However, potential relegation is still on the table as a possible punishment.
Borson, who previously worked as a financial advisor for City, believes the club will be cleared of all charges. "I think they’ll clear their name," he said on talkSPORT’s ‘White and Jordan’. "I think a case of this nature has to have a level of cogent proof, which seems to me to be impossible to present to an independent commission."
He also questioned the idea that so many individuals at the club and third-party companies could have been involved in a 10-year conspiracy. "That would be a massive call for effectively some KCs, and maybe a former finance director of a football club, to make against not just Manchester City, but numerous executives, third-party individuals, and potentially senior members of a foreign state."
The Premier League has a reputation for being strict when it comes to financial irregularities, but Borson believes the evidence against City is lacking. "It seems, to me, highly unlikely that the conduct alleged has been taking place over a 10-year period with the sorts of individuals that are involved in the club and the sorts of companies involved."
As the hearing approaches, fans of Manchester City will be eagerly awaiting the outcome. Will the club be cleared of all charges, or will they face severe punishment? Only time will tell.
