Roy Keane’s brutal response to Ian Wright claiming he ‘nearly died’ in crash before Match of the Day episode

Roy Keane’s Brutal Response to Ian Wright’s Terrifying Car Crash Experience

Ian Wright’s revelation about his near-death experience on the motorway sent shockwaves through the football world. The Arsenal legend opened up about the terrifying car crash he was involved in on the latest episode of Stick to Football. But his former Manchester United teammate, Roy Keane, wasn’t having it.

Wright explained that he was driving to film Match of the Day when his car lost control in wet conditions. He recounted the harrowing experience, saying: "We had terrible rain on the motorway, we had to slow down! Two years ago, I nearly died! In the same kind of weather. I’m petrified when it starts raining."

But Keane wasn’t convinced. He responded bluntly: "You didn’t nearly die! I hate when people exaggerate." Wright insisted that the crash was serious, saying: "So we’re driving and [the driver] hit the brakes. He must be doing 60 or 70 [miles per hour] – the car’s aquaplaned, it’s hit the central reservation, spun around and we’re facing that way [into oncoming traffic]. That’s enough to frighten you."

Keane remained unconvinced, firing back: "You’ve got airbags." Wright pointed out that there were no airbags in the backseat, prompting Keane’s next remark: "Oh right… you were probably watching The Godfather for the 50th time."

Wright’s crash occurred in February 2022, and he’s spoken publicly about the traumatic experience. It’s a stark reminder of the risks that footballers face both on and off the pitch. Wright’s revelation serves as a sobering warning about the importance of safety and caution on the roads.

The incident also marks the end of an era for Wright, who left Match of the Day at the end of the 2023/24 season after 27 years. In a statement, he said: "After my debut show whilst still a player in 1997 and many more memorable years, I’ll be stepping back from BBC MOTD at the end of this season. I feel very privileged to have had such an incredible run on the most iconic football show in the world."
