Agbonlahor slams ex-Man Utd star Cristiano Ronaldo despite landmark goal

Time for Cristiano Ronaldo to Step Aside for Portugal?

The debate over Cristiano Ronaldo’s future at the international level has heated up once again. And, in our opinion, it’s about time the Portuguese superstar considers stepping aside for the greater good of his national team.

Ronaldo recently made history by scoring his 900th goal for club and country, but even this milestone can’t distract from his underwhelming performances at the European Championship earlier this month. The 39-year-old failed to register a single goal in five games, and it’s time to face the harsh realities of his age and his impact on the team.

Former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor went as far as to call out Ronaldo’s poor form, stating that he may have "hindered other players being played" at the Euros. Agbonlahor is right, Ronaldo’s constant presence in the starting lineup may have limited the opportunities for newer, more exciting players.

Portugal’s coach Roberto Martinez has a tough decision on his hands. If Ronaldo continues to insist on playing a central role for the national team, he may have to sacrifice performances and results. On the other hand, if Ronaldo takes a backseat and allows younger players to emerge, he may be willing to retire without the constant pressure of trying to revive his international career.

Statistics don’t lie, Portugal’s squad has been improved by the introduction of exciting young talents. And while Ronaldo’s name may attract attention and bring in valuable sponsorship deals, his legacy should not be sacrificed on the altar of his individual ego.

We’re calling on Ronaldo to put Portugal’s interests above his own and step aside for a new generation of players to take the stage. Will he listen, or will he continue to hold Portugal back?
