Steve McClaren’s Jamaican Adventure: The Former England Manager’s Hilarious Attempt to Learn Patois
Steve McClaren has taken up a new role as the manager of Jamaica’s national team, and it seems he’s decided to immerse himself in the local culture. In a hilarious video that’s been making the rounds on social media, McClaren can be seen attempting to learn Jamaican Patois, with… mixed results.
The clip, which has been viewed millions of times, shows McClaren chatting with his players and trying to pick up some basic phrases. However, it’s clear he’s struggling to get to grips with the language.
At one point, McClaren is shown performing a thumb signal with one of his players, which he’s told is called "big up". He excitedly exclaims, "Big up! Big up!" before asking what else he can say. "You said something else this morning? No, something else. It was something…" he says, clearly confused.
But the cherry on top comes when one of his players tells him that "seal it up" is a Jamaican phrase. McClaren’s face lights up as he triumphantly shouts, "That’s what he said! Look me in the eye – seal it up!"
It’s clear that McClaren is having a blast learning about Jamaican culture, and his enthusiasm is infectious. But, let’s be real, his attempts at Patois are a bit cringeworthy.
As he prepares to take charge of the Reggae Boyz for the first time this weekend, McClaren’s antics are sure to be a talking point. Can he lead Jamaica to victory against Cuba in their CONCACAF Nations League match? Only time will tell.
