Jamie Carragher Slams "Really Poor" Manchester United Player Erik ten Hag Continues to Play
Manchester United are in disarray, and Jamie Carragher is not having it. The former Liverpool and England defender has pinpointed one "really poor" player in Erik ten Hag’s squad who’s holding the team back.
United have had a disastrous start to the season, losing three of their first four games, including a humiliating 3-0 defeat to Liverpool at Old Trafford. The Red Devils are already under pressure, and it’s not hard to see why.
Speaking on the latest episode of The Overlap, Carragher launched a scathing attack on Andre Onana, saying the goalkeeper is "really poor". "I don’t think he’s a good goalie, he’s a really poor goalkeeper," Carragher said. "But in terms of with his feet, he’s okay."
Carragher’s criticism comes as a surprise, given that Onana has been praised for his distribution and passing range. However, the 25-year-old’s mistake-prone nature and inability to make crucial saves has raised concerns about his long-term prospects at the club.
But Carragher wasn’t just targeting Onana. He also slammed the team’s overall approach, saying that United are still struggling to build from the back and are leaving themselves exposed to counter-attacks. "It’s the actual set-up and the structure," Carragher explained. "I said last year United keep getting counter-attacked, it’s because of where they are on the ball, players just seem all over the place. It doesn’t seem to me as if like if you get the ball, my man is going to be there."
The former defender went on to praise the attacking prowess of Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs De Ligt, but expressed concerns about the team’s overall balance and defensive solidity.
It’s clear that Carragher is frustrated with United’s lack of progress under ten Hag, and his scathing criticism may not be music to the ears of the Dutch coach. However, it’s hard to argue with Carragher’s assessment, given the team’s disappointing start to the season.
Will United turn things around and start to gel as a team? Only time will tell. But one thing is certain – Jamie Carragher will be watching closely and isn’t afraid to speak his mind.
