Condé Nast Traveler has this surprising travel destination for 2026, but I’m not complaining. Chiriquí Province is a perfect destination for those who love nature without the crowds. It offers a mix of mountains, coastline, and small town life.
The highland town of Boquete is known for its coffee farms and beautiful views. The Pacific coast of this part of Panama has quiet beaches and easygoing seaside villages. You’ll find friendly communities, comfortable cabins, and a truly slower rhythm of life compared to other areas of Panama.

Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica
Another Central American destination worth considering is the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica. The New York Times added this destination to their 52 Places to Go in 2026 for its slow pace of living and fewer crowds.
This part of Costa Rica is one of the country’s most untouched regions. It is known for its dense rainforests and quiet beaches. If you’re into spotting wildlife, especially sloths, macaws, and monkeys, this is an excellent area to visit them in their natural habitat. The New York Times and Condé Nast Traveler put this historic city in Mexico on their 2026 lists for a good reason. Querétaro’s historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is compact and easy to explore. It has pastel-colored colonial buildings, shaded plazas, and a strong café culture.
When in Querétaro, you will not be able to miss the impressive structure that crosses the whole city. Built in the 18th century, the aqueduct was designed to bring fresh water from nearby springs into the growing city.

Kanazawa, Japan
Most travel outlets had a Japan destination on their 2026 lists, but each listed a different city or area of the island country. One thing is for sure: none of them had Tokyo, Kyoto, or Osaka on their list. They all selected cities or areas that were not overcrowded with tourists.
CNN Travel added Kanazawa Prefecture to its list because it is off the usual tourist path.
Kanazawa is described as a quieter, more approachable destination in Japan, compared to larger cities. It has been popular with Japanese who want to visit the Japan Sea and experience the seafood. But it is now attracting the attention of international travelers as well.
The city is known for Kenrokuen Garden, one of Japan’s most celebrated landscape gardens.
In Kanazawa City, you will find traditional tea houses and small museums that are easy to enjoy at a relaxed pace. If you are looking for refined culture, beauty, and craftsmanship, Kanazawa should be on your list.

France was on a few travel magazines’ 2026 lists, and Condé Nast Traveler decided to add a surprising French Alpine destination, Saint-Gervais-les-Bains.
