Carragher Slams Szoboszlai for ‘Cocky’ Moment: "Unprofessional"
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has come down hard on Dominic Szoboszlai after the midfielder’s decision to try to create a better chance instead of shooting during Sunday’s 3-0 win over Manchester United.
Szoboszlai, who joined Liverpool from Red Bull Leipzig last summer, had a good match overall, assisting Mohamed Salah’s 56th-minute goal and continuing to enjoy the new system under manager Arne Slot. However, his decision to delay shooting late in the match didn’t sit well with Carragher.
A Moment of Madness?
As the Hungarian midfielder received the ball in United’s box just a few yards from the opposing goal, many expected him to shoot and potentially seal the win for Liverpool. Instead, he opted to try to create a better opportunity, which ultimately led to the ball going out of play.
Carragher, commentating for Sky Sports alongside Gary Neville, was left disappointed by Szoboszlai’s decision. "He’s being too clever, he’s being too cocky," he said. "He’s got to shoot the ball, he’s got to be decisive. That’s not what Liverpool want to see."
An Unprofessional Moment?
Szoboszlai’s decision didn’t just disappoint Carragher, but also left many Liverpool fans scratching their heads. While some argued that the midfielder was trying to create something special, others felt that he was being reckless and unprofessional.
As for Slot, he praised his opponents after the match, acknowledging the challenge they provided his side despite the scoreline. "United started really aggressive and we had to fight through that period," he said. "But, in the end some nice goals and a deserved win I think."
What’s Next for Liverpool?
Liverpool’s win over Manchester United was their third successive victory to start the 2024/25 season. With the Reds looking strong and consistent, fans will be eager to see how the team performs in the coming weeks.
Whether Szoboszlai learns from his mistake and becomes a key player for Liverpool remains to be seen. One thing is certain, however – Jamie Carragher won’t be holding back with his opinions anytime soon.
