Raphaël Varane’s Como Saga Takes a Dark Turn as French Defender is Dropped from Serie A Squad
Raphaël Varane’s move to Como has hit a massive speed bump, with the French defender being surprisingly dropped from the Serie A team’s 25-man squad list for the 2024/25 season.
Just a few months ago, Varane joined Como on a free transfer from Manchester United, signing a two-year deal with the option to extend. The 31-year-old defender, a four-time Champions League winner, was hailed as a "special" and "highly decorated" player by manager Cesc Fabregas.
However, things took a turn for the worse when Varane suffered an injury in Como’s Coppa Italia clash against Salernitana on August 11. The issue was later revealed to be a flexor muscle problem in his thigh, which is expected to keep him out for several months.
And now, according to Sportmediaset, Varane has been excluded from Como’s Serie A squad list for the upcoming campaign. Even more shockingly, the club is reportedly considering terminating his contract, just weeks after his arrival.
Varane has spoken highly of his new manager, Fabregas, and the philosophy of play at Como. In a recent interview with Manchester United’s official website, he said: "I’m very happy. There’s a lot to do, and it’s very exciting. I have a lot of experience at the highest level and now, to be able to share that knowledge and help a club build itself up and hopefully reach the top, is super exciting."
But unfortunately, it seems like Varane’s injury and subsequent exclusion from the squad have put his future at Como in serious doubt. Whether the club decides to terminate his contract or he recovers from his injury and manages to regain his place in the lineup, one thing is certain – this is a blow to both Varane and Como’s championship ambitions.
