Mason Greenwood Set to Make International Switch to Jamaica
The 22-year-old Manchester United forward has reportedly decided to switch his international allegiance from England to Jamaica, according to a new report from The Sun.
Greenwood’s decision comes after he completed a permanent transfer to Marseille earlier this summer, where he’s already made a stunning debut with two goals. The Englishman’s only appearance for the Three Lions came in 2020, when he was sent home alongside Phil Foden after breaching Covid-19 regulations.
The 22-year-old is eligible to play for Jamaica due to his Jamaican descent, and with FIFA regulations allowing players to switch allegiances if they’ve made fewer than four competitive appearances before the age of 21, Greenwood is free to make the switch.
Steve McClaren, the new manager of the Jamaican national team, has already spoken about the prospect of calling up Greenwood, saying he wants to meet with the player and discuss his commitment to the team.
Now, according to The Sun, Greenwood has officially decided to switch his international allegiance to Jamaica. The Reggae Boyz have already contacted the FA to formalize the switch, and McClaren will be tasked with qualifying for the World Cup with his new team.
Jamaica haven’t qualified for the World Cup since 1998, but with the increased 48-team edition in USA, Mexico, and Canada just two years away, they have a greater chance than ever to make it to the tournament.
The switch is a massive coup for McClaren and the Jamaican national team, and could be a game-changer for their World Cup hopes.
