The Premier League is back, and with it, the excitement of discovering the next big thing in football. Sky Sports pundits Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville have weighed in on the best young players in the league, and their opinions are sure to spark debate.
Kobbie Mainoo Takes the Top Spot
Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo has been named the best wonderkid in the Premier League by Carragher and Neville. The 18-year-old midfielder has already made a name for himself with his impressive performances for the Red Devils, and his FA Cup final heroics against Manchester City only added to his growing reputation.
Elliott and Wharton Follow Close Behind
Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton round out the top three. Elliott, despite missing out on the England squad over the summer, has continued to impress for the Reds and looks set to enjoy more minutes under new manager Arne Slot. Wharton, who was playing for Blackburn Rovers in the Championship just last season, enjoyed a breakout campaign at Palace and earned a surprise call-up to Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad.
Neville’s Top Four Prediction
Earlier in the week, Neville doubled down on his prediction that Arsenal will finally dethrone Manchester City and claim the title in 2024/25. However, Carragher remains unconvinced, believing that City will extend their record of consecutive Premier League titles to five. Arsenal, Liverpool, and Tottenham Hotspur complete Carragher’s top four, while Neville goes for City, United, and Chelsea.
Haaland to Take the Golden Boot
Unsurprisingly, both men agree that Erling Haaland will take the golden boot in his third consecutive season since joining the Premier League from Borussia Dortmund. The Norwegian striker has already shown his clinical finishing ability, and it’s hard to see anyone else taking the top scorer award.
